What is a journey?
A journey most commonly involves physical travel from one place to another, usually over a considerable distance. Most people go on a journey when they take holidays or go on a trip to somewhere special. It can be in a group or one person travelling alone.
The word journey sometimes also means an important learning experience. For example, when people grow more mature or come to understand someone or something they did not understand before, we say they have gone on an inner journey. This type of journey can be either emotional or intellectual, or a combination of both. An inner journey often, but not always, accompanies a physical journey.
Another type of journey is one of the imagination. It is one that can be taken without going anywhere at all physically. In an imaginative journey it is possible to visit times and places that we can not physically go to, such as outer space, a future or past civilization, or a country that exists only in the imagination.
It is also common to talk about “the journey of life”. This refers to the particular pathway that each individual chooses to follow through life, and includes all the experiences and learning that takes place along the way. This view of life as a journey is often explored in text.
